Carla Hanson is a recently retired high school English teacher. She has a master's in English Composition, and is fascinated by all aspects of writing. She is a Teacher Consultant for the California Writing Project and a certified facilitator in the Amherst Artists & Writers method.
As a Teacher Consultant with the Writing Project, she provides workshops on how to teach writing to adolescents and coaches teachers in writing strategies. As a facilitator for the Amherst Writers and Artists, she offers writing workshops. She also coaches high school students in writing effective personal statements.
She has facilitated an ongoing women's writing group for a decade. She's interested in place writing, creative nonfiction, the role writing can play in healing, and writing for personal and spiritual growth.
Carla can cite many influences on her knowledge of writing and teaching writing. The Great Valley Writing Project (GVWP) has been very instructive in what she knows about writing and how to teach it. Another powerful influence is Pat Schneider, the author of Writing Alone and With Others. Pat founded Amherts Writers and Artists (AWA). Carla was certified as a facilitator of the AWA method in 2007, a truly life-changing process. Carla now serves on the AWA Board.
Carla grew up in northwestern Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and goes home as often as possible. Most of her extended family lives there--and they are a lively bunch, so something interesting is always going on. She grew up watching this mountain, part of southern border of the Jocko Valley. See the heart?
